Results of concentrations of radioactive cesium in powder milk and liquid milk.(2025)

We measured powdered milk and liquid milk from this summer through
September.
As ordinary citizens, we wonder why radioactive cesium is detected in
powdered milk.
Is it related to the regions where the raw milk is sourced?
Is it impossible to manufacture products with no detectable levels?
When we ask the manufacturers, however, they do not disclose any details.
Moreover, because the measured values are far below the national limit
(50 Bq/kg), they do not seem to treat the issue with much seriousness.
Still, we suspect that different sources of raw milk may be used
depending on the product, because follow up milk (for infants around one
year old and above) consistently shows higher readings than newborn
formula (for newborns and up).
It has been fourteen and a half years since the Fukushima nuclear
accident, and overall levels should be declining due to natural decay.
However, some concerning patterns remain — brands that had consistently
shown ND (not detected) have suddenly begun showing detectable levels,
and some values that were previously in the double digits have risen
into the triple digits.

Comparison of Cesium-137 Concentrations in Seawater after Radioactive Contaminated Water Release

Since August 24, 2023, the discharge of treated water accumulated at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the Pacific Ocean has begun. Therefore, in December 2023, seawater samples were collected and the concentration of cesium-137 was compared with seawater samples collected before July. This time, in July and August 2024, the third round of seawater sampling was conducted, and the results have been added.

All measurements were conducted for 259,200 seconds using a germanium semiconductor detector (GCD-70200).

For the measurement of tap water or seawater, extremely low detection limits are required. Tap water is also not “ND” (Not Detected). Before March 11, 2011, the nationwide average radioactivity level in tap water was 0.04 mBq/kg (Japan Chemical Analysis Center: FY2008 analysis data). According to environmental radiation monitoring surveys conducted around nuclear facilities, seawater measurements (outside Fukushima) typically show results of approximately 1–3 mBq/kg, regardless of location.

At our measurement facility, with the cooperation of the Citizens’ Nuclear Information Center, we employ a concentration method called the AMP method. Using a chemical reagent known as ammonium phosphomolybdate, we concentrate a 40–50 L sample over a period of about three days. The concentrated sample is then measured for a long duration using a germanium semiconductor detector.

We measure drinking water around you (including spring water and well
water) as well as seawater in each area. Please consult us regarding the
sample quantity and fees.

Results of concentrations of radioactive cesium in yogurt.(2025)

In June of this year, measurements were conducted on 12 different brands of commercially available yogurt. Below is a summary of the measurement results:

  • mBq/kg represents 1/1000 Bq/kg. ND stands for Not Detected, and NA stands for Not Applicable.
  • Please note that even if the product names are the same, the origins of the raw milk may vary.
  • The selection of brands is at the discretion of the measurement requester.

Results of concentrations of radioactive cesium in urine (2024)

We put the results of urine monitoring from January to December 2024 together.
(N=202, We picked up only the first result of those who were monitored multiple times.)

Below are the results of radiation measurement.

Comparison of Cesium-137 Concentrations in Seawater after Radioactive Contaminated Water Release

On August 24, 2023, the discharge of radioactive contaminated water from
Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (FDNPS) began.

We collected seawater samples around FDNPS in December of that year and
analyzed the concentration of radioactive cesium-137 to compare with the
data before the release.

Radioactive cesium concentration analysis was performed using the
AMP(Ammonium molybdophosphate) method in cooperation with CNIC.
